WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Sanford D. Bishop, Jr. (GA-02), Vice Chairman of the U.S. House Appropriations Subcommittee on the Military, Construction, Veterans Affairs, and Related Agencies issued the following statement after President Trump issued a declaration of national emergency and plans to divert critical military construction funding to build a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border:
“I am opposed to the President declaring a national emergency at our southern border, and I will work with my fellow Appropriations Committee colleagues to challenge this reckless decision. If there were a true emergency at our southern border, the President would have declared this along time ago. This declaration could fleece our much-needed military construction projects in Georgia like those at Fort Gordon, Fort Benning, as well as projects at the Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany. It will also pull funds away from much needed natural disaster zones.
“This careless act will weaken our military, lessen our readiness and limit the capabilities of our military men and women. It also sets an irresponsible precedent, and erodes democratic norms – all in the name of a wasteful border wall.”
